TRAINING:  Subject:  Shaolin Punching and Kicking Drills -- Many of us spend the majority of our practice time working on forms, 2-man sets, stretching, or qi training.  But one area that is very important in traditional Shaolin training is the high repetition of individual techniques like kicks, punches, sweeps, etc.  This exercise helps to polish each move and tones and strengthens the body.  Some modern Gong Fu people omit these drills as being "karate-like", not realizing their historical background.  In ancient times, foreigners (Japanese, Koreans, Okinawans, etc.) Were taught only punching and kicking drills and not complete arts.  Therefore, their progress could only consist of body conditioning and constant refinement of these basic movements.  Although we are fortunate enough to have access to complete gong fu, we must still perfect these "tools of the trade" by singling out moves and performing them time and again with power, speed, and intent.
